Known Issues

(Yes, we are aware of that...)

While StarCry offers a unique and engaging experience, we are aware of a few areas where the mod presents limitations and had criticisms:

HIGH DIFFICULTY LEVEL

For casual gamers, the difficulty can sometimes be overwhelming. The combat sequences and puzzles are designed to be challenging, which might not be suitable for those looking for a more relaxed gameplay experience. The difficulty was lowered by patches multiple times. There is no aim assist and no joypad support.

BUGS AND GLITCHES

As StarCry is built on CryEngine 2 and its beta development kit, there are occasional issues that might impact gameplay. Players may encounter crashes or unexpected behavior during their playthrough. The base game had issues that were never fixed, such as the serialization of saves that can break scripts, and memory leaks with particles. It is recommended to save your game in a new file frequently.

LEVEL DESIGN LIMITATIONS

The level design, while visually satisfying for that time, sometimes lacks verticality. Walking times and cutscenes can sometimes be too long and disrupt the pace. This can result in a more linear experience, limiting the exploration and movement options that players might expect from a modern first-person shooter. Some new assets and game mechanics were also underexploited.

PERFORMANCE ISSUES

Due to the detailed textures and complex environments, some players might experience performance issues, especially on older hardware. Because the mod is heavier than the base game, ensuring your system meets the recommended specifications is crucial for a smooth experience.

NATURALNESS OF DIALOGUES

The dialogues in StarCry can sometimes feel unnatural. This is partly due to the team not having a native English speaker to help refine the script. This might impact the immersion for some players, especially those who are used to more polished dialogue in games.

OUTDATED GRAPHICS

Development on StarCry began in 2007, and with a small team of just two developers responsible for producing over 2000 models, some graphics may appear a bit outdated or rushed. While the design and effort are commendable, most elements might not meet the visual standards of more recent games.

These challenges do not overshadow the overall quality and enjoyment that StarCry offers but are important to consider for potential players. The development team worked hard to address these issues and improve the mod, but after such a long development period and with fewer and fewer active players, it was no longer possible to dedicate the necessary time and they had to resign themselves to leaving the mod as it was.
